This Week in MXA, presented by O’Neal, is all about Josh Mosiman’s quest for success at the 2026 Fox Raceway, Hangtown, and Washougal Nationals. With access to bikes and parts from all of the major OEMs, Josh can race any 450 he wishes, but the selection process this year has come down to two. In the past, he has ridden different bikes at each round, but this year we’re looking for one consistent steed to ride for three planned events. Here is a detailed comparison between two of the heaviest hitters in the 450cc motocross class: the Yamaha YZ450F and the KTM 450 SX-F. While both are championship-winning machines, they go about delivering performance in very different ways.

🚀 Engine & Power Delivery

Yamaha YZ450F

• The Power Character: Yamaha uses a unique reverse-cylinder head layout (intake at the front, exhaust at the back). This creates a straight intake tract that gives the bike an incredibly aggressive, instantaneous throttle response. It hits very hard down low and pulls aggressively through the mid-range.

• Tuning Superiority: Yamaha dominates in the electronics department thanks to the Power Tuner App. You can pair your smartphone directly to the bike via Wi-Fi/Bluetooth to adjust fuel mapping, ignition timing, and traction control for free.

KTM 450 SX-F

• The Power Character: KTM’s SOHC powerplant is the king of usable, linear power. It builds power smoothly and predictably from the bottom end, but boasts an astonishingly long top-end pull that revs higher than the Yamaha. It is less exhausting to ride over a long moto because it doesn’t “yank” your arms as violently.

• On-the-fly Electronics: It features a handlebar map switch that toggles between Map 1 (White – Smooth) and Map 2 (Green – Aggressive), alongside Launch Control, Traction Control, and a Quickshifter for clutchless upshifts.

🛠️ Chassis, Handling & Weight

• Weight Advantage: The KTM is traditionally lighter than the Yamaha by several pounds. This makes the bike feel incredibly agile in the air and easy to transition from side to side in tight S-turns.

• Frame Feel: KTM’s steel frame offers a distinct “compliant” flex character that absorbs small track chatter beautifully, while Yamaha’s aluminum frame feels very rigid, planted, and incredibly stable at high speeds.

• Cornering vs. Stability: The KTM is generally praised for its sharp, effortless cornering intuition—it hunts for the inside line perfectly. The Yamaha feels incredibly stable at high speed down rough straights but requires a bit more physical input to carve tight turns.

🏁 Suspension: Springs vs. Air

• Yamaha (KYB SSS): Widely regarded as the gold standard in production motocross suspension. Because it uses traditional coil springs, it has a very predictable, plush stroke that works brilliantly for a massive variety of rider weights and skill levels right out of the box.

• KTM (WP XACT Air): The air fork design makes the KTM incredibly versatile. You can drastically alter the fork’s stiffness in seconds using a hand pump. While highly adjustable and excellent at resisting harsh bottoming on huge jumps, some riders find it requires more trackside maintenance (checking air pressures) to keep a consistent feel compared to Yamaha’s springs.
